Another focus of Wilschut’s megacities’ research manifests in Consolidation: the nature of urban planning. Calculated or improvised, urban design represents a vision of a society. How are its members supposed to cohabitate and communicate? Is there space for expressing individuality or building communities? Do the relations between its buildings suggest openness and safety for its inhabitants? The public spaces surrounding buildings usually indicate how those aspects have been addressed. But what if there are nearly no such spaces provided?
