When the wind passes over the desert, it picks up small dust particles. If the wind is strong enough, dust storms are created. In some West African countries, the high amount of dust in the air limits visibility and the sun can disappear for several days, similar to fog. Airline flights are canceled every year as a result. In exceptional cases, the desert sand even reaches the northern European continent.
