Epicenter

Beirut

2023
archival print/dibond/white frame
59-77.9 inches, (edition 5 + 2 a.p.)

For years, these concrete silos characterized the harbor mouth of Beirut. They were seen as beacons of perseverance after the bombings and wars they had endured for years. After the Beirut explosion of 2020, their meaning changed drastically. The structure became the iconic image of a catastophe that remained in the collective memory of the world. Just before the collapse of the silos in the summer of 2022, Wilschut made this monumental photo work. The title Epicenter refers to the ambiguity of this monument.
