None of these thirteen swimming pools are the same. Every spot reveals something about its owner. A pool per apartment is an extreme luxury, especially considering that this residential building is located in the neighbourhood right next to the infamous Paraisópolis favela. A closer look at the image, however, disturbs the promise of upper-class bliss. Abandoned spots and rough concrete construction signal that the “luxury” world here is a troubled one. Individuals suggests that decay and brutality are not simply the qualities of overpopulated ghettos, rather, they might be the fabric of the entire society.
