Athens International Airport ElefthĂ©rios Venizelos is named after the famous Greek statesman Eleftherios Venizelos. The airport is located about 30 km outside Athens and opened in 2001 to replace the old, now closed airport ‘Ellinikon’. The new airport is located east of Central Athens on the other side of the intermediate ridge Imittos. If all plans are fulfilled, the old airport will turn into the largest urban renewal project in Europe in the future.
