The Meneba factory in Rotterdam, officially known as Meelfabriek De Maas, has a rich history and striking architecture. The factory was designed in 1913 by architect Michel Brinkman. Construction was completed in 1914, and the factory was taken over in 1919 by the Meelfabrieken der Nederlandsche Bakkerij. The van Dusseldorps family, who founded the N.V. Eerste Nederlandse Coöperatieve Meelfabrieken in 1881, commissioned the construction. Members of the bakers’ union could become shareholders in this cooperative enterprise. In 1919, the factory was taken over by Meneba, which was established in 1915. The factory is still in use today, primarily processing wheat into flour. The complex combines various architectural styles, including concrete silos, offices, cranes, and a distinctive tower. The architecture of the Meneba factory exemplifies functional design, emphasizing efficiency and productivity. The Meneba factory is not only an industrial monument but also a symbol of the rich history of the food industry in Rotterdam.
