The Spanish village of Aceredo disappeared under water in 1992 when a Portuguese hydroelectric power station created the Alto Lindoso reservoir. In recent years, a large part of northern Spain has had to contend with an enormous drought and as a result the village has partly resurfaced. Five other villages disappeared below the waterline at the time despite the protests of the inhabitants. It is not the first time that the villages stick out of the water again. The ongoing drought in this normally rainy area has brought the water level down to just 15 percent of its usual level. According to the Mayor of the nearby village Lobios, the situation is a clear consequence of the climate changes of recent years. But the geo-political situation, in which Portugal has closed six nearby dams for irrigation and electricity generation, is also not contributing to the situation.
