Johannesburg, or iGoli – “the place of gold” in Zulu – is a city of energy, contrasts, and looming skies. Just like its gold-built foundation, the city brims with tension and transformation. In the summer months, dark clouds roll in suddenly, followed by fierce lightning bolts and thunderclaps that make the skyline tremble. These thunderstorms, as impressive as they are unpredictable, mirror the very dynamism of iGoli itself: turbulent, powerful, and constantly in motion. Hans Wilschut works regularly in Johannesburg; his project The World in One Place particularly reflects on the Central Business District after the apartheid era and the crime wave of the late 1990s.
